| Short and long blasts are used when 2 vessels are in danger of colliding. A short blast lasts for 1 to 2 seconds and a long blast lasts for 4 to 6 seconds. One short blast means that your are going to change your course to starboard. Two short blasts means that you are going to change your course to port. Three short blasts means that you are backing up. Five or more short blasts in rapid succession is a signal of danger or of doubt. The blasts are either made before or during your change of direction depending on whether you are following inland or international rules. | ||
